The managing editor is responsible for the coverage and administration of the national newsroom. The managing editor will commission and edit stories from staffers and freelancers while managing the day-to-day tasks of the editorial team. The managing editor will think about news coverage comprehensively, analyzing to ensure publishing cadence is optimized and consistent and that the coverage is hitting the right audiences. The managing editor will work with editorial leadership to ensure that coverage from the national editorial team is consistent, collaborative, and unique.
This position will report to the Editor in Chief.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Work closely with the EIC and deputy editor to ensure all content adheres to our editorial standards and that coverage is fair, unique, and impactful
Manage the national editorial calendar, synching all state editorial calendars, and overseeing the day-to-day work of editorial staff
Manage invoices and contract paperwork for the national editorial team
Liaise with the product manager to identity CMS needs for the site
Work closely with EIC and deputy editor on sensitive stories and tentpole initiatives
Work with growth director and audience development team to flag top performing content to national and state-based editorial teams
Provide both top and line edits to stories and assist in formatting and publishing of articles to the site
Seek out opportunities to collaborate with the audience development and video teams to translate stories into social and video content
Develop cross-state and cross-platform tentpole initiatives when appropriate to leverage national audience engagement
Help manage national editorial team budgets
Promote professional development for the team
Recruit and maintain an extensive and diverse stable of freelance writers, editors, and fact-checkers for the national newsroom
Serve as a senior leader in the newsroom
The ideal candidate will have:
B.S. or B.A. degree or equivalent in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field.
5+ years of experience in digital publishing, news reporting, editing or in digital political marketing or communications, including defining and growing a brand and voice through content.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong sense of voice and tone.
Experience with building an engaged cross-platform audience through content (organic and/or paid).
Experience with hiring, building, and managing a distributed team.
Familiarity with performance analytics tools such as Omniture, Chartbeat and Google Analytics, and with the process of deriving insights therefrom.
Strong management, interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary stakeholders across the company.
Ability to manage time and multi-task under tight deadlines with a strong attention to detail.
A passion for publishing quality news and content in an authentic voice across online and mobile channels.
A basic understanding of CMS systems.
