Staff Writer/Reporter (in State)
In state reporters develop impactful, engaging coverage through careful reporting and creative storytelling. Reporters are expected to develop diverse sourcing and approach content in a variety of formats and styles. They will be responsible for writing short aggregated posts and explainers, longer-lead reporting, and enterprise work. Reporters are expected to be able to explain complicated policies to readers outside of the state, find unique angles in to political events, and provide depth and context to all of their work. Reporters are also expected to collaborate with the video and social teams and think creatively about storytelling across platforms.
This position will report to the state Managing Editor.
Pitch, report and write 2-3 commodity/enterprise stories per week (500 – 1,000 words), focusing on how federal and state policies affect the lives of people in the state
Pitch and participate in regular, magazine-style series that dig deeper into the important political and policy issues facing the state
Develop articles with a mind on how that work will best reach readers on multiple social media platforms
Write copy to engage readers with your stories on social media platforms
Record video and take photos when possible to help tell stories that grab attention on social media
2-3 years experience in a newsroom environment, pitching, reporting and writing articles and covering events on a deadline
Passionate about following national and state politics and major policy battles
Experienced and enthusiastic about producing social media to accompany reported work
Ability to manage time and multi-task under tight deadlines.
